I enjoyed Strange the Dreamer, and honestly it was better than I expected it to be. I recently decided to pick up due to Muse of Nightmares coming out. There were certain parts of the book that I really enjoyed, but I felt like the pacing was a little off. For example, the book felt way too slow at times, with almost too much necessary detail. I did enjoy certain parts of the book, but I wouldn’t recommend this to you if you hate slow paced books. This took me a while to get through (and I actually started this a long time ago, before getting bored and dnfing it), but overall I’m glad I read it.
I love all the characters in this book. For the most part, the characters all came together or helped enhance the plot in some way. What I didn’t like was the fact that some of the characters were kind of dull, like Mina. I felt like she was just an average antagonist, with the only thing setting her apart was that she’s the sister of Sarai. I did enjoy reading about the main characters, Lazlo and Sarai though.
The writing of this book is actually really good, but it sometimes felt necessary with all the random detail. I felt like it would have been fine if Laini Taylor summed it up in a quicker fashion to make it a little faster. The only part I felt like was good the way it was are the world building details. It helped me to image Weep vs. Lazlo’s fantasy Weep in a more vivid way (that I enjoyed).
Also, the plot was just okay in the book. I mean there wasn’t really anything special about it, and looking back, not much happened for the 500 or whatever pages. Towards the ending, a lot more was revealed, but it took a while to get there. It bored me towards the beginning, but it got better the more the book progressed.
Strange the Dreamer was pretty good and I’d recommend it if you enjoy slower paced books with more character and story detail. I’ll definitely read Muse of Nightmares, so I’m actually looking forward to that.
